Initiative for a European Social Pact
The ETUC met in Paris on 27 and 28 May and took the initiative to develop a joint approach. This approach was formulated in the so-called Paris Declaration: The creation of new and better jobs. According to the European trade unions, during the next three years one percent of the GNP should be invested in new and better jobs. FNV chairwoman Agnes Jongerius is satisfied with the so-called Paris Declaration. ‘In Paris we fought for a new European trade union approach in addition to a national approach.
Europe must lend a helping hand to its inhabitants by guaranteeing spending power and employment. Where the European Commission and the European Union are unable to operate jointly, we have managed to. And that really is necessary, because employees are still being exploited. Just look at the Rumanians in Someren. If that’s our Social Europe in practice, then we still have a lot of work to do.
Now it’s important that the Commission de decisive, that government leaders stop hiding.’ More information about the Paris Declaration (Dutch) can be found on the FNV website.
